Where I’m From
By: C. Brooks
Age 14
I am from not caring,
cousins talking back to their parents
my hood killing innocent young males
I hear screaming, yelling kids and gunshots in bed.
I am from giving up, teen mothers, abortions when not ready, families without daddies, feeling hopeless and unhappy
I am from a neighborhood of drug dealers, rapists, crackheads and crime. I am from playgrounds with no swings, broken homes and abandoned buildings
In my eyes, I still dream of a life defined by not refusing to give up, or giving in, or pretending there is no way out because where I am from, I look at the glass half way full. My mother will always be my keeper and I will make her proud. Looking in the mirror I say to myself, where I’m from I am a SistaKeeper and I define Me!
I am an “I define Me girl!
Write your own Where I'm from poem or short story and be prepared to share it next week.
